Despite its name, social games such as FarmVille are what you make of them. While the appeal for many is to play the game and develop their farm alongside their friends, for others, playing alone may offer the same type of enjoyment, as the game is entirely playable and enjoyable solo if desired. In this respect, social games are very much similar to MMORPG's, which provide a setting and an environment where gamers can play together, but don't ultimately force gamers to do so.
That said, most FarmVille players have two main things in mind when playing the game, and those are developing their farm as quickly and effortlessly as possible, and building up their number of friends and contacts who play the game. The fact that these goals go hand in hand makes them that much more desirable, as the more friends you have, the more opportunities you'll have for quickly developing your farm and acquiring bonus money and items.
Keep Your Friends Close...and Strangers Away
The more socially active among us, such as those boasting Facebook friend's lists in the triple digits, should have no trouble connecting on the farm with at least a few of their friends who already play the game. For those lacking such robust friend's lists though, one of FarmVille's greatest flaws is exposed. Unlike other games, such as the aforementioned MMORPG's, where you can play with thousands of gamers worldwide without fear, FarmVille makes it more difficult to so easily enjoy the company of others.
Those with little to no friends playing the game will be forced to either play the game alone, or add random people to their friend's list. There are numerous Facebook groups dedicated to this pursuit, bringing gamers together and allowing them to connect and become friends for the purpose of helping each other through the game as quickly as possible. In this way they can enjoy the benefits of playing with others, though the drawbacks are obvious. Adding these people as friends gives them access to personal information you probably won't want them to have access to. Whatever is a farmer to do?
Privacy Made Easy...Like Customizable Drapes for Your Window
The solution to this whole conundrum is not nearly as nerve wracking or brain twisting as it may appear on the surface. Facebook is outfitted with powerful privacy tools that allow you to fully customize who can view what information and images are contained within your profile. Most people know that this extends as far as allowing them to specify which specific groups can access what information, be it friends only, the friends of those friends, or everyone.
What many Facebook users don't know is that these privacy tools are taken a step further, allowing them to block specific users from accessing certain information, be they friends, friends of friends, or what have you. In this way, FarmVille players can invite and add numerous people to their friend's list while still having total control over what information these relatively unknown people are able to see.
To accomplish this, go to the settings tab, and from there to the privacy settings. From the contact information and profile information sub menus within privacy settings you'll see numerous settings that can be customized. For those which you would like to block access to specific people, choose the customize option from the drop down menu, and then input the name(s) of the user(s) in question.
These privacy tools not only allow you to experience FarmVille the way it should be experienced, but it also gives you access to several additional features (such as being able to visit your neighbour's farms to give them a helping hand), and items (which become unlocked as you acquire more and more neighbours). Best of all, you may even get to know and become true friends with those strangers through the course of building your farms together, which is the real joy to be had in social gaming.
